Café Milk Carton Recycling Initiative #IAYSP Korea

The Sejong Branch of YSP KOREA has launched the “Café Milk Carton Recycling” initiative to promote sustainable practices and reduce environmental waste in the local community. The project began by observing the large volume of milk cartons used in cafés, particularly for café lattes. It was noted that preparing just three large lattes consumes a full 1,000ml milk carton.

Recognizing the environmental impact of discarded milk cartons and their connection to deforestation and climate change, the branch sought practical ways to contribute to sustainability. Milk cartons, made from high-quality pulp, can be recycled into everyday items such as tissues and toilet paper.

Since June, local cafés in Jochiwon-eup, Sejong City, have participated in the program. Used milk cartons are collected weekly on Sunday afternoons. In the first month alone, over 300 cartons were gathered.

The collected cartons are cleaned and dried before being delivered to the community welfare center. Depending on the quantity, they are exchanged for toilet paper or trash bags, which are then donated to children’s centers and multicultural centers, creating a positive impact on the community.

The initiative also plans to expand to more cafés and integrate environmental education sessions for café owners and local residents encouraging sustainable practices across the city.

Members involved in the activity have expressed satisfaction, noting that small actions for the environment can create meaningful positive effects. In the face of serious climate change, they remain committed to continuing efforts that inspire others to participate in environmental sustainability.
