Peace Designer Seminar (Finland)
Youth and Students for Peace (YSP) held a Peace Designer Seminar in the Östersundom Youth Community Center, in Helsinki, Finland on April 21st, 2019. The coordinator and speaker of the event was Mr. Antto Hassinen, Director of YSP North Region.
The purpose of the event was to encourage local youth to see their potential to influence their own life, relationships and communities as an actor of peace and harmony. The seminar also aimed to provide the attending youth a practical toolset for fulfilling this innate potential.
As such, after a short introduction of YSP as an organization, Mr. Hassinen shared YSP’s perspective on sustainable peace with the participants. Each participant was guided to reflect on their own habits and human relationships and commit to one step of improvement in each area.
A majority of the seminar’s time was focused on the development of peace projects in support of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The 22 participants divided into four groups that came up with one project each. The four groups then presented their own project idea to the rest of the participants. The project ideas addressed the topics of deforestation, world hunger, mental health and bullying in schools.
At the end, the participants voted the best project which ended up being the project tackling mental health issues among youth. Everyone was finally encouraged to keep developing the projects they had come up with as well as taking practical steps towards the improvement of peace in their own life and in their relationships.
